Lake Manyara National Park
Arusha is home to one of the most popular national parks in Tanzania: Lake Manyara National Park. This park is considered to be among the best in the country. Tree climbing lions are a unique species that can only be found in Tanzania’s Manyara and Serengeti national parks. These parks are the only places in the world where you can see these lions. The Ishasha region of Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park is another location where tree-climbing lions can be observed. This location is in Uganda. This park is one of the most modestly sized national parks in Tanzania, with a total area of 330 square kilometers, which is equivalent to about 127 square miles.
The soda lake, which can be located within the park and was also called for a tree that is frequently seen within the park, is the inspiration for the park’s name. In Maasai, the name for this kind of tree is Emanyara, which is derived from the scientific name Euphorbia Tirucalli. The Maasai people depend on this tree to protect their cattle from marauders and other dangers, hence the tree is extremely important to their culture.
Since it was founded in 1960, Lake Manyara National Park is Tanzania’s second-oldest national park, making it the second-oldest national park in Africa after Serengeti national park. The Tanzania National Parks Authority is in charge of the park’s administration. Around four hundred different kinds of birds have been identified at Lake Manyara National Park, making it a true paradise for birdwatchers. Not to mention the vast numbers of different kinds of creatures that may be observed at any time of the year.
The location of Lake Manyara National Park and how to get there
The Northern Tourism Circuit includes Lake Manyara National Park as one of its stops. Other stops on this circuit are Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. A tourist destination named Arusha town is approximately 126 kilometers distant from this location. The park may be situated directly on the primary route that travels between Arusha and Karatu. Mtowambu settlement, which is located on the bottom of the Great Rift Valley, is where you’ll find it. Because the journey to the park is so beautiful and is dotted along the way with so many interesting cultural places, it will take you anything from two to three hours to travel there.
Lake Manyara Airport, which is located within the park, provides passengers who are sick of long trips with another travel alternative in the form of planes. This airport is so well known on a global scale that it even has its own unique codes: LKY for the IATA and HTLM for the ICAO. The airport is served by a large number of local airlines, many of which also have operations in other airports in Kenya and Tanzania. Coastal Aviation, Air Excel, Safari Air Link, Regional Air, Zan air, and Precise Air are the local airlines that are flown by the most passengers. Other popular options include Air Tanzania.
Lake Manyara National Park’s Sightseeing Opportunities
The blessed nature national park may be found on the foot floor of the Great Rift Valley. It is home to a diverse collection of animals, birds, lakes, woodlands, and other natural features. There are a lot of things to see and do at Lake Manyara National Park that will encourage you to go on a safari there. The descriptions of the most popular attractions in Lake Manyara National Park may be found in the following lists.
Lake Manyara got its name from a kind of tree that is widely seen in the area and is known by the locals as Emanyara. Locals gave the lake its name. This becomes an important supply of water for the many animals that live inside the park as a result of its coverage of about one-quarter of the overall park area. The lake is home to a greater variety of aquatic species, such as hippos and crocodiles, as well as birds, such as big flocks of flamingos and other types of water birds. The rainy season is the only time of year when the natives fish on the lake, and boat cruises are not common. Because of the lake’s ecological significance, most terrestrial species frequent it. The saltiness of the water in the soda-alkaline lake is a result of the process that led to its development, which was volcanic activity.
Animals: The park is home to a wide variety of animals, ranging from the more little types of critters to the larger, more game-like creatures that are permanent residents. Lake Manyara features four of the five animals that are considered to be part of the “African Big Five,” with the exception of rhinoceroses. Visitors to most African parks come to see the “big game,” and Lake Manyara is no exception. Baboons, who are known for their mischievous behavior along the road, tree-climbing lions, leopards, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and impalas are just some of the other animals that may be seen there.
Birdwatchers praise Lake Manyara National Park as a “birder’s paradise” due to its incredible diversity of avian life, which includes more than 400 different species. Although though the park is very small, it is home to a significant number of birds, including a sizable colony of flamingos that congregate near the salty Lake Manyara. The park is home to both permanent inhabitants and migratory birds that are solely there for the purpose of nesting. Both aquatic and terrestrial birds may be observed in the park at any time of the year due to its diversity of habitats.
Owing to the position of the park in a volcanically active area along the foothills of the great rift valley, the park is home to several volcanic phenomena, including hot springs. The park is known for its geothermal features, particularly its hot springs, which are the result of volcanic activity. The geothermal activity is responsible for the heating of the groundwater produced by the hot springs. The hot water rises from the topmost section of the soil at an average boiling temperature of around 60 degrees Celsius, which is an excellent boiling point for cooking eggs. At the westernmost section of Lake Manyara, there is a thin strip of land that runs along the base of the escarpments that surround the rift valley.
Huge Rift Valley Escarpment Lake Manyara National Park is blessed with enormous rift valley escarpments that are about 1600 meters above sea level as a result of the activities of volcanicity. Especially along the path leading to the main gate, the walls of the rift valley offer a beautiful picturesque vista. They provide visitors an excellent overhead view of the park and serve as a stopping point for tourists on their way to the Ngorongoro crater.
Lake Manyara National Park has a variety of activities.
Lake Manyara National Park is the place to go if you want to have a quick safari in Tanzania after finishing off your business in Arusha. It’s a little park, but there are a lot of activities that visitors may participate in, so it makes up for its size. It is not the best place to see all of Africa’s “big five,” but there is plenty wildlife for visitors to enjoy in a short amount of time, such as a one-day or two-day safari at Lake Manyara National Park.
Game drives: The Lake Manyara National Park offers game drives that are not only educational but also fun, and they can be completed in as little as three hours. There are three different types of game drives: the morning game drive, the afternoon game drive, and the night game drive. All of these game drives should be done in 4×4 safari cars. During the game drives, which bring you closer to the animals, open safari landcruisers are what you and your group will ride in. The game drives get you up up and personal with the animals in their natural environments.
Night game drives are available at Lake Manyara National Park, which is one of the few national parks in Tanzania that offers this activity. The night wildlife drives begin at seven o’clock in the evening, and the park rangers organize them in conjunction with the Lake Manyara Serena resort. The Lake Manyara Serena lode is where all of the guests are brought together after being picked up and dropped off. You will have the opportunity to witness a wide variety of species, including tree-climbing lions, hyenas, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, baboons, monkeys, elephants, and leopards, to name just a few. You will also have fantastic wildlife experiences.
Lake Manyara National Park is home to the tree-climbing lion seen here.
Birdwatching: Lake Manyara National Park is known as a “little birding paradise” because it is home to more than 400 different species of birds. Birdwatchers can go birding at any time of the year, but the wet months are the most popular because that is when birds are nesting and migratory birds are present. Flamingos, Geese, Ducks, Swans, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Lovebirds, Fischer’s Sparrow Lark, Grey Crowned Crane, Two-banded course, Narina Trogon, Emerald Cuckoo, Crowned Hornbill, Schalow’s Turaco, Crested Guinea fowl, and other birds are among the most often mentioned birds. If you want to have a birding experience that will last a lifetime, you just need to have a well-informed guide who is equipped with all comprehensive bird books, birding equipment, raincoats, good zoom cameras, and other items. The bird list is always large.
Treetop walk is a great way to see the rain forests that surround Lake Manyara. Throughout the tour, you will swing from tree to tree and take in breathtaking views of the park from above. This is Tanzania’s first treetop walkway and is also referred to as the Manyara treetop walkway. We will take you on an exciting journey through the park’s picturesque woodlands on one of our zip lines. The treetop experience is an optional attraction that costs additional money on top of the standard admission charge to the park. These are similar to night game drives, but the arrangements are different, and the package that you buy to enter the park does not include them.
Ride on a boat: At Lake Manyara National Park, taking a trip on a boat is a seasonal activity that is only done during the wetter months of the year. The boat trip is dependent on the amount of water that is present in lake Manyara; when there is a little amount of water in the lake, they do not allow boat cruises on the lake. When making a reservation for these activities, you need to have a lot of information.
See the Hot Springs: Lake Manyara National Park, which was formed as a result of the activities of the Great Rift Valley, features a large variety of attractions, one of which is a collection of hot springs. It is well worth your time to travel to these one-of-a-kind volcanic features; while you are there, you may observe the forces of nature at work as you cook eggs or a banana. Exciting things can happen to you as a result of life experiences.
Lake Manyara National Park is a park that can be visited at any time of the year, and the fact that it is only a short distance from Arusha makes it an excellent choice for a safari that can be completed in a single day. If you are planning a business trip to Tanzania and need somewhere to spend an additional day afterward, Lake Manyara National Park is your best option.
