SELOUS GAME RESERVE SAFARI TOURS
Selous Game Reserve is not only Tanzania’s largest game reserve, but also the largest on the African continent. The game reserves occupy a total of 50,000 square kilometers of ground (19,000 square miles).
The Selous game reserve is also one of Tanzania’s oldest protected areas or game reserves. It was established in 1922 and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, 60 years later.
Seluos reserve was established as a result of the discovery of more diverse and rare wildlife at the reserve. The park’s popular Miombo woodland is home to some typical wildlife. In 1896, the colonial masters, who were Germans, founded the Selous Game Reserve as a protected area.
The game reserve was converted into a hunting area in 1905, and the reserve was renamed Fredertick Selous. It was named after the great hunter Frederick, who was well-known for his big game hunting skills. He died on the battlefields of World War I in 1917 at Beho Beho.
The game reserve is now one of the safest places for lions to live, and it was designated as a Lion Conservation Unit in 2005. The most interesting feature of the reserve is the River Rufiji, which serves as the reserve’s water supply. The park’s inhabitants include Acacia savannah, open savannah grassland, wetlands, Miombo woodlands, and many others. The various inhabitants have attracted a diverse variety of wildlife to the park.

Selous Game Reserve safari Tours
Apart from its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalos, the reserve has a diverse population of large mammals, including huge pods of hippos and prides of lions, as well as packs of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus in Latin) and families of black rhinoceros, both of which are rapidly disappearing in other parts of East Africa (read more on when is the best time to visit Selous with AfricanMecca).
The larger game reserve wilderness is located within the Selous ecology’s 90,000 square kilometers, which includes other protected areas, most notably Kilombero Game Controlled Area to the west and Mikumi National Park to the north. This is a very diverse terrain. Giraffes with disdain feed delicately on acacia trees in deciduous miombo woodlands. Herds of wildebeest and antelope graze on the lightly forested grasslands north of the majestic Rufiji River, always on the lookout for lion prides snoozing in the sun.
The Great Ruaha River flows into the Selous Game Reserve near the Matambwe Gate, north of the Beho Beho Hills, through a landscape of volcanic hot sulfur springs, fast-running rapids, and river gorges where long-crested eagles search for shrews or even baby monkeys, falling feet-first from the skies with high, keening shrieks. This stretch and others have reported over 440 bird species, making it a Mecca for twitchers on an avian-seeking trip in Selous. It connects to the majestic Rufiji River, which has a navigable network of stunning oxbow lakes and tributaries that create an inland delta before rejoining to form a mighty waterway that runs to the Mtemere Gate and Airstrip to the east. This extremely beautiful northern strip has been designated for Tanzanian wildlife vacations, primarily eco-tourism and photographic safaris bookable with AfricanMecca, between the two gates.

SELOUS SAFARI PRO TIPS?
We suggest merging Selous Game Reserve with other unique parks in Southern and Western Tanzania, such as Mikumi, Ruaha, or Katavi, and finishing with a chimp trekking safari in Gombe or Mahale.
You will expand your safari to Northern Tanzania safari parks including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti (wildebeest migration). Finish your journey with a Swahili cultural tour and beach vacation in Zanzibar.

HOW TO GET TO SELUOS SAFARI TOURS
To get to the Selous Game Reserve, you can take a road trip that takes you directly to the park, or you can fly into the park and land at the airport. A railway line is also open.
The best and most common mode of transportation is by road, as it provides more scenic views of the great Southern Tanzania. However, the journey from Dar es Salaam is longer but more enjoyable as you travel through the country’s remote villages. The area is densely forested, with mountains and hills covered in evergreen vegetation. This vegetation serves as a habitat for wildlife such as endangered antelope species.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1620893489172{background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]
