If you have never been to Africa before, planning a Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari is both intriguing and oddly unsettling. That is, unless you have seen photographs or those high definition documentaries, that somehow flatten everything into perfect angles. While out there in the wild, life is not so neat. The horizon shimmers with heat, the air is heavier, and the lions show up almost by accident. Although this journey lasts 4 days, which is very short and runs the risk of blurring by, the memories will stick with you long after returning home.
The itinerary begins in Arusha or Moshi and it takes you through the landscapes which defy every single expectation you have of a safari. While there is absolutely no way to prepare completely, that is the very reason it is so appealing. The thrill of the unknown.
In the following lines this article will share the daily details of what I expect to encounter along the way. I strongly suggest you take your time and let yourself relax into the daydream you deserve, however brief, it may be.
Your journey goes through Tarangire National Park, over the endless Serengeti plains, around the Ngorongoro Crater rim, and finally into the tiny colorful world of Mto Wa Mbu village. You’ll see vast herds, spots of predators if fortune decides to smile on you, and you will spend the nights in lodges of varying comfort and quality from the modest to the remarkable.
You set off early, the vehicle humming as you leave behind the soft clutter of Arusha or Moshi. It doesn’t take long before the towns slip away and the land opens up. The morning feels cool at first, almost shy. Eventually the sun climbs higher, the heat building until the baobabs of Tarangire come into view. They look almost imaginary, swollen and smooth, older than anything you’ve stood beside before.
Heading deeper into the park, the first animals that you’ll probably come across are elephants. They move slowly, occasionally in small groups that seem to appear between the trees. I have seen a matriarch lift her head, pause, and then continue with her way as if we were not more than a passing breeze. To some extent, it is something that you cannot prepare yourself for.
At lunch, you might have an open space under an acacia tree. While having sandwiches and fruits, your mind would be distracted by occasional movements at the river’s edge. In the afternoons, there is a chance of sighting giraffes stretching their necks between branches or zebras stepping delicately across the dust. Of course, there are no guarantees. That is part of the enjoyment for many people.
You are now adjourned from the park. With evening in collapse, you will head towards your accommodation near Lake Manyara or Karatu. The kind of tiredness that settles in deeply is joyful to experience.

Today’s start is well ahead of sunrise. The journey is not always easy, and perhaps there’s a sense of letting go of what you’ve previously known. The hours that follow settle into a certain predictability, punctuated by views that become increasingly vast and golden, revealing spaces you never knew existed.
The first impression often deceives: the unfathomable expanse before you appears unearthly. Your brain fights to comprehend the sheer size. Grassy plains surge outwards in all directions, rippling under winds like seas.
As it stands now, the vast sky feels like a lot to take in all at once.
Your guide will leisurely steer the vehicle, stopping now and again at your request, and more so, at the rim of your eye catching movement. A pride of lions may be sprawled on a termite mound, so still that you question their existence until one lazily flicks their ear. No two visits entwine together. During the visit, you might also spot a solitary cheetah standing motionless in the heat shimmer.
Depending on the day’s activities, lunch is served at the camp or beneath a solitary tree. The mid-afternoon light begins its slow descent toward evening, casting a warm honey hue. You might find yourself wishing time could freeze, preserving that moment.
Around the campsite, everything is calm as dusk approaches. You will be served dinner in from a tent and as you eat, listen and look out for subtle sounds far in the distance.

You likely experience a fire to desire to hold onto every bit of the reserve as you drive through the provided last circuits and animal spotting. As you depart, the reserve serves breakfast at the designated campsites or provides food for the cars. There is no strict schedule, so no rush.
It is possible to visit Olduvai gorge, where people used to protrude tools and objects years and years ago. Many people do find this heritage site as mildly emotional while others feel semi indifferent and don’t understand the attraction.
In the afternoon, you’ll arrive at the Ngorongoro highlands. This evening, however, you will be staying in Karatu instead of on the crater rim. The hills are covered in small farms and coffee trees, and they are steep and green in color. Evening approaches quietly.

During the fourth day, the morning seems to be less busy. After breakfast, you must leave Karatu and drive down through a patchwork of farms and woodlands to reach Mto Wa Mbu village. It is a small town but full of energy, bordering large open spaces. You may walk past banana groves where bananas are ripening or take a bite of freshly sliced mango from a stand by the road.
As part of the tour, your guide will either take you to one of the local artisans or to the market. The air is filled with spices, fruits, and a hint of smoke from kitchens. In addition, every once in a while, one catches a glimpse of things that are too fleeting to describe vividly: a kid running after a tire on the road, or a woman with a basket on her head.
In the afternoons, lunch comprises locally sourced seasoned rice and a side of grilled vegetables. They give you some time to rest, a short break before you set off again towards Arusha.
During the back drive, feelings can go from energized to pensive. Eyes are spaced out looking past the window perhaps mulling over the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari and how it felt, in some ways, unlike expectations. Not especially smaller but more honest.
There are some journeys that cannot be summarized tightly in a paragraph. They remain in the back of your mind, memories that are unrefined. If you would like, I can assist you in personalizing these further whether through details or the pacing to match your narrative. You simply have to ask.
