Despite being one of Tanzania’s oldest and fourth-largest national parks with excellent accessibility, Mikumi National Park has remained refreshingly free from mass tourism. Part of the greater Selous ecosystem, adjacent to the Udzungwa Mountains and within reach of Ruaha, Mikumi features expansive floodplain grasslands, shrubland, and forest areas often compared to Tanzania’s northern parks. These habitats support herds of elephants, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, giant eland, and graceful impala, along with their attendant predators. While animal numbers do not match the Serengeti’s migratory spectacle, your Mikumi safari with Serengeti Mara Experts offers a more intimate experience with far fewer vehicles than you would encounter in the Ngorongoro Crater or central Seronera areas.

African wild dogs track prey across long distances using coordinated teamwork and high-pitched, birdlike calls. Their hunting success rate is among the highest of any predator, and Serengeti Mara Experts can guide you to areas where these endangered carnivores are sometimes spotted in Mikumi National Park.
Despite the Tanzam Highway cutting through the park, a threat to wildlife elsewhere in East Africa, few animals perish on the Mkata flood plains. Like Selous, Mikumi supports a wide range of habitats for numerous rare and endangered species. The park remains more accessible than many reserves and is crossed by several trails that began infamously as caravan tracks on slave routes and ivory traders’ paths, long before Burton and Speke explored them and declared Mikumi one of the most beautiful places to be.
During the dry season, from June to October, the plains fill with ungulates. You can spot tree-climbing lions using this tactic both for hunting and to escape tsetse flies. Grass-foraging elephants here are smaller than those in other parks, most likely because larger males were routinely culled for their ivory before the global ban. A possible giraffe subspecies, distinguished from Maasai and reticulated giraffes by irregular markings, also roams these grasslands. Serengeti Mara Experts can guide you to the best wildlife viewing areas throughout the season.
Many uncommon and endangered species live in the foothills on either side of the plain, including the magnificent, deep-chested sable antelope with its dense, burnished chestnut coat and great arcs of horn. On an outback safari, you’ll see goat-like roan antelopes, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest with the back end of a horse and the horns of a sheep, and the greater kudu, stiff-maned and softly bearded with striped haunches to blend in with the sun-dappled shrubland (read more on when is the best time to visit Mikumi).
During the wet season, driving on the soaked black cotton soil of the plain is challenging, but hippo pools in the park’s north are fringed with hundreds of wading birds. Yellow baboon families groom each other on murram roads in the south, and vervet monkeys swing and play in the undergrowth.

Mikumi National Park does not offer the high-end luxury lodges found in northern Tanzania. Stanley’s Kopje stands out for its traditional design and authentic wilderness setting, providing a genuine safari experience within the park.
TIPS FOR MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Wildlife in Mikumi is abundant and varied, though concentrations are generally lower than in the Serengeti. The central Mkata floodplain attracts large herds of elephants, buffalos, impalas, and zebras throughout the day.
BEST TIME TO VISIT MIKUMI: Plan your safari between June and October for the best wildlife viewing. During these dry months, elephants and large herds of ungulates gather around the remaining water sources on the plains, making sightings more reliable.

Consider pairing Mikumi National Park with other remarkable destinations across Southern and Western Tanzania. Selous, Ruaha, and Katavi each offer distinct wildlife experiences, while Gombe and Mahale provide unforgettable chimpanzee trekking opportunities.
Another option is to extend your journey into Northern Tanzania. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti bring you closer to the wildebeest migration and diverse ecosystems. Serengeti Mara Experts can help you finish with a Swahili cultural experience and relaxing days on Zanzibar’s beaches.

Mikumi welcomes visitors throughout the year. Most travellers arrive during the dry season from June to October, when wildlife gathers near permanent water sources and viewing conditions are excellent. The wet season runs from November to May, bringing lush vegetation and good birding opportunities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1620893489172{background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Mikumi National Park supports a rich variety of large mammals across its open floodplains and wooded hillsides. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and impalas are commonly seen throughout the park. Predators include lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas. Sable antelopes and greater kudus inhabit the miombo woodland zones. While rhinos are absent, the park offers reliable sightings of four of the Big Five. Lions are occasionally spotted resting in trees, a behaviour more commonly associated with Lake Manyara but observed here with surprising frequency.
With over 400 recorded bird species, Mikumi ranks among the top birding destinations in southern Tanzania. The park’s diverse habitats, from grassland to woodland and seasonal wetlands, attract both resident and migratory species. Extended safaris of three days or more yield impressive bird lists. Commonly observed species include the black-bellied bustard, secretary bird, helmeted guineafowl, yellow-billed oxpecker, bateleur eagle, and cattle egret. Serengeti Mara Experts can arrange dedicated birding itineraries with experienced guides who know the park’s seasonal patterns and productive viewing areas.
The park lies within a dramatic mountain landscape that adds scenic depth to every safari. The Uluguru Mountains rise to the east, their forested slopes forming a striking backdrop to the open plains. While most visitors experience the mountains from a distance during game drives, the views attract photographers and nature enthusiasts seeking memorable compositions. The mountains also influence local weather patterns and support distinct vegetation zones that enrich the park’s overall biodiversity.
Other mountains in the park include the Udzungwa Mountains and the Malundwe Mountains, which are the largest and highest. The Malundwe range sits in the heart of Mikumi National Park, linking the Uluguru Mountains, the Udzungwa Mountains, and the Uvidunda Mountains. The Malundwe Mountains are made up of three peaks, the highest of which is located in the southern part and rises to 1,290 meters.
